Akosombo Dam spillage: Mahama debunks claims

Reports claiming Former President John Dramani Mahama saying President Akufo-Addo refused to meet victims of the Volta River Authority’s dam spillage due of their ethnicity misleading and untrue.

The said claim was on Monday, October 16, 2023 widely circulated on social media by some users who might have been disappointed including the former Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho.

“Akufo-Addo does not want to come to Volta region to inspect the havoc of the spillage. If it was Ashanti region he would have rushed there. Are Ewes not human beings too? Are Asantes more human beings than ewes?”

The Former President at nowhere made the above accusations as purported by Daily Insights.

This follows former President Mahama’s visit to some of the communities devastated by the Akosombo Dam spillage in the Volta Region’s South, North, and Central Tongu constituencies, where he sympathised with the victims and recommended methods for mitigating the tragic event.

“It happens once in a while not every year, it is an effect of climate change… we have to see how to adapt. I think that the approach has been a bit lackadaisical, actually, that is why I came, so that it will let them see that this is real. Sometimes, if you read in the media, you think that this isn’t real,” John Mahama said in his engagement with the media.
