Former President John Dramani Mahama said on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, that Ghana is the most indebted country in the world, citing a viral flier he came across on social media.

H.E John Dramani Mahama, Former President and Flagbearer of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), made this assertion during his “Building Ghana Tour” when he addressed the Wiaso Omanhene during a courtesy visit which was broadcast live on Facebook by Woezor TV. 

“Recently, I was looking at a paper and it said ‘The most highly indebted countries in the world’, Ghana is leading. We owe 31 billion Dollars”, he said.

The flagbearer of the NDC talked about a recent artwork that was widely circulated on social media which highlighted several African countries and their debt levels.

As a result, Ghana is the African country with most debt to China among those who have benefited from the HIPC scheme. Ghana’s $31.1 billion debt does not indicate that the country is the most indebted in the world, but rather that it is the most indebted to China among African HIPC beneficiaries.
